Floristic patterns and plant traits of Mediterranean communities in fragmented habitats

چکیده
Unveiling the processes that determine the spatial distribution of species is a central goal for community ecology and biogeography. Hubbell (1997, 2001) suggested that the dispersal history of biological assemblages, rather than habitat specialization, provides the main explanation for spatial variation. Neutral theory predicts that among-site floristic similarity (beta-diversity or commonality) should decrease logarithmically with increasing geographical distance because Laboratoire Evolution et Diversité Biologique, CNRS/UPS, Toulouse, France, Departament de Biologia Vegetal and Departament d’Ecologia, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain

Classification of Habitats in Bakhtegan wetland (Fars Province) in Mediterranean Wetland System
Understanding ecosystems and their zonation based on their characteristics and sensitivities is an essential step in protecting natural resources and the sustainability of their habitats. The Mediterranean Wetland Habitat Classification System (MEDWET) is used to identify Bakhtegan wetland, Fars Province, Iran, by hierarchical classification of their habitats, in which they are identified and d...
متن کاملDissecting the Effects of Simulated Cattle Activity on Floristic Composition and Functional Traits in Mediterranean Grasslands
Livestock exerts direct and indirect effects on plant communities, changing colonization and extinction rates of species and the surrounding environmental conditions. There is scarce knowledge on how and to what extent these effects control the floristic and functional composition of plant communities in grasslands. We performed an experiment that included several treatments simulating tramplin...
متن کاملInferring Resilience to Fragmentation-Induced Changes in Plant Communities in a Semi-Arid Mediterranean Ecosystem
Predicting the capacity of ecosystems to absorb impacts from disturbance events (resilience), including land-use intensification and landscape fragmentation, is challenging in the face of global change. Little is known about the impacts of fragmentation on ecosystem functioning from a multi-dimensional perspective (multiple traits). This study used 58 500-m linear transects to quantify changes ...
متن کاملRock outcrop habitats in the Venezuelan Guayana lowlands: their main vegetation types and floristic components
(Rock outcrop habitats in the Venezuelan Guayana lowlands: their main vegetation types and floristic components). The Guayana Shield, located in north-eastern South America, consists of a highly complex and composite mosaic of landscape elements. Amongst these, inselbergs are very conspicuous, because of their peculiar shape and their unusual associated vegetation. Geologically, these rock outc...
متن کاملOf Asian Forests and European Fields: Eastern U.S. Plant Invasions in a Global Floristic Context
BACKGROUND Biogeographic patterns of species invasions hold important clues to solving the recalcitrant 'who', 'where', and 'why' questions of invasion biology, but the few existing studies make no attempt to distinguish alien floras (all non-native occurrences) from invasive floras (rapidly spreading species of significant management concern), nor have invasion biologists asked whether particu...
